Hi Chris. I'm a little confused about the $31,000 in passive income needed to retire in Italy. Is social security included in that ? Does that passive income have to stay at 31,000 unused?

I was listening to the Smart Move podcast and Sam said although the consulate website says you need to show 31k euros in reality you actually have to have 45k passive income to be approved. This would mean I couldn’t retire in Italy. Is she correct? that would break my heart.

The PATHETIC part is even after paying through our nose in the U.S healhcare system. It is still so crappy that the service is beyond rude. They could care less if you live or die as long as they have the payment. Someone in the comments below said the most profound thing about Healhtcare in the U.S. It is ONLY about money. What a shame.

Very nice, Chris. We’ve just come back from two weeks in Campania and rarely used cash. I experimented and found my Apple Wallet with Visa was accepted practically everywhere. I’d not use an ATM. Fees are exorbitant. In any case, I bring some cash as a reserve. I suppose it’s different if you live in Italy and have a bank account. I used cash only to tip a bellboy once or a chambermaid. On toll roads, cards are accepted. Last year, we used touch on the toll roads to Genoa and Torino but they don’t have that in the South, I suppose. We learn different customs in different regions but I’m so glad Italy can be done cashless!

I love it! I’ve missed these walks and visits to Santa Dominica Talao. I don’t know why, but the welcoming feeling and homey-ness of this community comes through so strongly. I think I’d love to spend the summer there with my pups and making new friends. ❤

Thanx Chris well that was fun. I so loved loved loved coming up there and the terrace is magnificent on the edge of town. It was so quiet I was there in December it was so quiet. I was so blessed to be able to sneak into Casa Cristina when the guys were out to lunch and THE VIEWS and workmanship was second to none and the owners have very good taste LOL. How fun to have been there it is a lovely village and then there is Scalea and the beach below. WOWZA! I don't think I asked how you and Pete found the area? Share with all of us....cheers. Great snapshot of life in Italy. One thing that always stands out for me is the civility. People greet each other. For example, get on a bus, and you and the bus driver exchange ‘good morning”, or good day/evening depending on time of day. Same in stores/shops. I am in Italy a lot, and that always stands out. Good manners, really. Though, having skied, for example, in Italy one characteristic that is noticeable is that lining up/queuing is not natural. Aren’t all these cultural differences so interesting? My advice for anyone going to Italy, or relocating, is learn a bit of the language. Makes an enormous difference. Thanks.

Hi Chris, thanks for sharing this one. Definitely lots of house and tons of potential. I like the house renovations that Antonello proposes. Do you have a sense for the cost to do what he proposes? As for the garden, would take that on as a personal project with fruit trees, a small vegetable/herb garden, trees trimmed for a shaded terrace and leave room for a pool. Would end up being a fantastic residence.
